Luxury consignment shop in Paris: how it works
What is a luxury consignment shop?
Consignment means entrusting an item to a professional who sells it for you and pays you back the price, minus a commission. You remain the owner until the sale: nothing is paid in advance, but you receive much more than with an immediate buyout, and you have nothing to do.
For a designer bag, coat, or shoes, there are four options:
|
Option |
What you receive |
Effort for you |
Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Specialized consignment shop |
The selling price minus a commission |
None: collection, photos, sale, shipping are all handled |
Low, item insured and tracked |
|
Immediate buyout ("cash") |
Often 30 to 50% of the resale value |
None |
Low, but you leave half the value behind |
|
Online platform (Vestiaire Collective, Vinted...) |
The price minus 10 to 25% in fees |
Photos, descriptions, negotiation, parcels, disputes |
Medium: disputes, returns, scams |
|
Selling to an individual |
100% of the price |
Everything, including finding the buyer |
High: fake transfers, checks, meetings |
Consignment is the right choice when the item is worth more than a few hundred euros and your time counts. This is exactly the niche of Personal Seller Paris: luxury and designer goods, authenticated, sold online and in our space at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann.
How it works at Personal Seller Paris: the 5 steps
From your closet to your bank account, everything happens in five steps, and you only intervene in the first one.
- Describe your items to us. Two minutes on the Sell with us form: brands, number of items, condition, and a few photos. We will reply within 24 business hours with an initial selection of the items we will accept.
- We come to you, or you ship to us. In Paris and the near suburbs, a member of the team will come to your home for free at a time that suits you and leave with your items. Elsewhere in France or abroad, you send us the items selected based on the photos: shipping is at our expense.
- We authenticate and set the price. Each item is checked, then valued based on the actual second-hand market (what comparable items have sold for, not what they are listed at). The price is communicated to you and validated with you before it goes on sale.
- We sell. Studio photos, product page, listing on the site in French and English, and for a selection of items, display in our space at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann (3rd floor, (RE)STORE space). 3-hour delivery in Paris by courier, 24 to 48 hours worldwide. You can track your items from your consignor portal.
- You get paid. The amount for each sale, minus commission, is paid to you no later than 45 business days after the sale, once the transaction is finalized.
The consignment period lasts for one year. If an item hasn't found a buyer after a year, we will propose either a price reduction or to return it to you.
What we accept
We take luxury and designer items that have real demand on the second-hand market, in a condition that we can guarantee to the buyer.
- Brands: luxury fashion houses (Chanel, Hermès, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Celine, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Prada, Gucci...) and sought-after designers (Isabel Marant, Jacquemus, Toteme, Max Mara, The Row...).
- Volume: we take closets starting from 10 items. This allows us to provide free travel and offer you a real service. An individual item of high value (an Hermès or Chanel bag, for example) can be an exception: ask us.
- Categories: bags, women's and men's ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories (belts, scarves, sunglasses), jewelry and watches, home and decor pieces, new cosmetics.
- Condition: from new with tags to good condition with slight signs of wear. We describe every defect on the product page, so we do not take stained, torn, or very worn items.
What we refuse, without exception: counterfeits and items of dubious origin. A refused item is returned to you at no cost.
In doubt about an item? Send us a photo via the form: we will tell you within 24 hours if it has a place with us and at what price.
How much does it earn?
You receive the selling price minus our commission: 33% of the selling price, plus €1 in fixed fees per item. This commission covers everything: collection, authentication, photos, storage, listing on the site and at Galeries Lafayette, customer service, delivery, and the guarantee provided to the buyer.
A concrete example:
|
|
Amount |
|---|---|
|
Selling price of a very good condition Chanel Timeless medium bag |
€6,000 |
|
Personal Seller Paris commission (33% + €1) |
− €1,981 |
|
What you receive |
€4,019 |
Who sets the price? We suggest a price based on actual sales of comparable items, and we validate it with you. A fair price from the start sells in a few days; a price that is too high makes you wait months, then forces a drop. Our interest is the same as yours: to sell at the best price, quickly.
If an item is worth more than you thought, we will tell you too: it often happens that we re-evaluate a bag upwards after having it in hand.
How long to sell?
This depends on three things: demand for the item, its condition, and its price. As an indication, here is what we observe:
- A few days: iconic bags at market price (Chanel Timeless, Hermès, Louis Vuitton Neverfull, Dior Lady Dior), common sizes in ready-to-wear (36-40, 38-40 in shoes).
- Two to six weeks: designer ready-to-wear, accessories, seasonal pieces (coats in autumn, sandals in spring).
- Longer: extreme sizes, very distinctive pieces, above-market prices.
Listing in our space at Galeries Lafayette significantly accelerates sales for bags and accessories: customers see the item, touch it, and often buy it the same day.
Why consign rather than sell yourself
Selling a €3,000 bag on a platform is a small job: consignors who come to us after trying it always cite the same reasons.
- The photos. A poorly photographed item sells for less, or not at all. Our items are shot in a studio, from every angle, defects included.
- The negotiation. The "last price?" inquiries at all hours, offers at half price, buyers who disappear. We negotiate for you, within the limit you have set.
- The scams. Fake transfers, fake couriers, returns of a bag that isn't yours. With us, the item is insured and the transaction is secure from beginning to end.
- The logistics. Packing, mailing, tracking, managing a delivery dispute. Our couriers and carriers handle it, with insurance.
- The authentication. An online buyer always has a little doubt. Our inspection and guarantee remove that doubt, which translates into a higher selling price and a faster sale.
Result: even after commission, many consignors receive as much, if not more, than by selling alone, without spending their evenings on it.
FAQ: consigning your items with Personal Seller Paris
I don't live in Paris, can I consign? Yes. Home collection covers Paris and the near suburbs. Elsewhere in France and abroad, you send us your items after a selection based on photos, and shipping is at our expense. Describe your items on the form, and we will explain what to do.
Who decides the selling price? We propose a price based on the real market, and we validate it with you before listing it online.
What happens if my item doesn't sell? The consignment period lasts for one year. After this period, if the item is still unsold, you choose: a price reduction to boost the sale, or the return of the item.
How many items are needed to consign? We take closets starting from 10 luxury or designer items. For a single item of high value, write to us: we look at it on a case-by-case basis.
How and when am I paid? Each sale is paid to you, minus commission, no later than 45 business days after the sale. You track your sales and payments in your consignor portal.
Are my items insured? Yes, from the moment they are collected until delivery to the buyer.
Do you also take men's items? Yes: bags, ready-to-wear, shoes, and men's luxury and designer accessories.
